The Amazing Deering Race Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

MadMin: I attempted to contact the owner of The Amazing Deering Race to find out about the status of this cache on August 31, 2009. I have received no response from the owner on the cache page or via email. Because of that I'm afraid I have to archive this cache.

I will be more than happy to review this cache again and (hopefully) reinstate it once you have corrected any issues with the cache. please contact me via ma.reviewer@gmail.com to do so.

Please note that unarchiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Introduction:

The Amazing Deering Race is so named because it takes place on land that was once the Deering Estate and because it is loosely modeled after TV's Amazing Race. The idea is not so much to race by running through the woods, rather to race by using your navigational skills and geocaching ability.

You can do this alone and try to record the best overall time or hook up with another group or individual and race against each other. The setup is best suited for two teams or individuals, but separate instructions for three teams or individuals are also provided.

The goal is to bring geocachers together at designated times to compete in the woods together. It would certainly be more fun that way. But if you are not so inclined, you could certainly do this on your own.

General information:

Each stage will provide you either with coordinates for the next leg of the race or with instructions you must complete first before you can locate the next leg.

The race is designed to separate competing teams at the start, but it is possible that you will meet up at subsequent stage(s). You are welcome to use stealth and deception to prevent a competing team from discovering what you have found, but all containers and micros must be replaced exactly as you found them.

You should be aware that along many of the trails there are ribbons and arrows and other items placed by someone else to direct mountain bikers along a certain route. These have nothing to do with this race. I have placed no arrows or markers of any kind to point you in a certain direction. I have only placed items at the designated coordinates for various stages of the race.

Make sure you pay close attention to the map provided in the start container. If you follow it carefully it will keep you on the right trails and help you avoid unnecessary bushwhacking, particularly when navigating to the Road Block.

GPS readings can be erratic in some parts of these woods, so I have provided helpful clues to minimize your search time. Don’t let your unit send you looking in a place that does not conform with the information I have provided.

Setting up a Race:

You will certainly enjoy the Amazing Deering Race more if you compete with another group or individual. To set up a race, put this cache page on your watch list and post a note below indicating that you would like to race with someone else and when you would be available to do so. After that, interested people can email each other to set up a start time.

About the Race:

The Amazing Deering Race is comprised of four parts with each step modeled in some way after the TV show.

Part One: The Start - Get the tools you’ll need to complete the race and perform the required task.

Part Two: The Detour - A choice between two tasks. One task requires a longer walk while searching for items that will be easier to find. The other task involves a shorter walk but the items you will be searching for are smaller. You choose which Detour you think can be done the fastest. If two teams or individuals are competing, you may not both do the same Detour. The team/person who completes the Part One task first will choose who does which Detour.

Part Three: The Road Block - You will determine the Road Block location by using information obtained while traveling your chosen Detour route. At the Road Block, you will initially be searching for a container that provides instructions for a task that must be performed. As is the case with TV's Amazing Race, if you are competing as a team, only one member of your team can work on the Road Block task. All others must wait until the task is completed.

Part Four: The Finish Line - Using coordinates you will obtain by completing the Road Block task, you will then head for the Finish Line in search of a small cache, marking the end of the race.

Start Instructions:

Park on Colton Road at: N 42 12.321, W 71 44.672

The posted coordinates will take you to a large rock. The Part One container is hidden under some leaves and bark at a crack in the rock. Inside the container you will find a map of the area, worksheets to take with you to record your time for each leg of the race, extra pens in case you forgot one, instructions for the Part One task, and instructions for the Part Two Detours. If you need a pen, take one and drop it in the Finish Line container when you are done.

There are two sets of instructions for the Part One task. One sheet is for anyone racing alone or against only one other group. The other sheet is for three or more teams or individuals who are competing against each other. Make sure you take the correct sheet.

If you are competing with only another team or individual, the team/person to complete the Part One task first will earn an immediate advantage. For this reason, competing teams or individuals should each get a copy of the Part One instructions and read them together, being prepared to act quickly once the instructions are clear.

When you are done:

Chances are your worksheet will get dirty and worn during the race, so I have provided clean sheets in the Finish Line container. Use a clean sheet to copy down your completion times for each leg of the race and drop it into the cache.

How long will it take?

I estimate the optimal time to complete all stages of the race for individuals who are hiking will be about an hour and a half, though it might be wise to plan for two hours. Biking could possibly save close to a half hour off of your overall time.

Special Bonus

The final cache does not contain trade items but the Deering Jackpot is not far away and it is loaded with stash. As a special bonus, coordinates to the Jackpot are provided inside the Finish Line container.
