L’histoire
d’Axel Schloss est étonnante. Enfant juif, il a échappé aux
déportations vers les camps de la mort grâce à une famille de
courageux Perwéziens qui l’ont caché durant la seconde guerre
mondiale. Après la guerre, Axel a émigré aux Etats-Unis où il fit
fortune et devint l’un des dirigeants de la célèbre firme de jeans
Levi Strauss. Bien plus tard, il sut se souvenir des sauveurs de
son enfance en offrant une plaine de jeux à la commune de Perwez.
Une stèle commémorative fut érigée en son honneur. La plaine de
jeux a entretemps été déplacée à un jet de pierre, le long du RAVeL
(une multicache lui est d’ailleurs consacrée :

Le Pays d’Eole »). Mais la stèle est toujours là. Cette
cache off-set a pour but de faire (re)découvrir cette page
totalement oubliée de notre histoire locale. Elle a été élaborée en
étroite collaboration avec mes complices du Cercle d’Histoire de
Perwez, qui ont extrait de leurs précieuses archives
un article de presse relatant les faits.
Cette
cache constitue une modeste contribution personnelle au
devoir de mémoire. Il rend hommage à tous ces courageux qui
ont pris des risques pour sauver des innocents de la barbarie

The story of Axel Schloss is
quite unusual. As a young Jewish boy, he could escape to the death
camps in Germany thanks to a brave Perwezian family who could hide
him during War World II. After the war, Axel emigrated to the USA where he built his fortune and
became manager of the famous jeans manufacturer Levi Strauss. A lot
of years later he remembered those who saved him and he offered a
brand new playground to the perwezian population. A Schloss
monument was erected by the Perwez municipality. The Schloss
playground has been recently moved not far from here along the
RAVeL bicycle path (your junior geocachers can enjoy it thanks to
the multi “
Le Pays d’Eole”). But the monument is still there. Thanks to
this off-set cache, you will learn about a forgotten page of our
local history. I received therefore help from my friends of the
Perwezian History Association, who retrieved from their archives
an old article about Axel Schloss. With this cache, I would
like to humbly honor the memory of brave citizens who once risked
their life to save innocents from nazi barbary. In the same spirit, discover “

Parquez-vous au parking
