Get there by rowboat or walk across the ice! (difficulty much less by walking in winter)

This cache is in a rock wall at the edge of Canopus Lake in Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Putnam County, New York.

It's a standard 35mm film canister. Initial contents include; log book, pencil stub, single white die (dice) and computer Eject key.

This micro-cache is realistically only accessible by water. I suppose you could get to it overland, but it's a pretty steep vertical rock scramble down to the sheer face where the cache hides. Rent a rowboat at the Canopus Lake station, or bring your own small craft, kayak or canoe.

Wintertime bonus: Intrepid cachers can just walk right up to it across the ice! That's how we planted it. Make sure the ice is safe. Be careful!

Took the boys up to rent a boat and do some fishing, and off course stop by for the cache. However, when we got there we found only the top of a clear film canister sitting on the moss under the tree. Can you say - I have a bad feeling about this? I'm thinking its gone.

I've been watching the weather and the high temperatures are supposed to be above freezing everyday for the next several days. I wanted to grab this one while the lake was still frozen over. I got within about 120' of the cache when the snow suddenly turned into slush and my foot went into about 3 inches of it. Despite many people ice fishing out there today, I knew that the ice in the center of the lake is much thicker than around the edges. I decided that rather than chance it, I'd turn back. So I trekked over the land until I was directly above the cache and then ventured down onto the ice. No problems under foot here. Signed the log and was on my way - TNLN. Glad that I can cross this one off my list.
