The very first geocache that I
found, back in March 2001, was
Wilderness Park Cache. At that time, you had to hike to most
caches that had been hidden. That particular cache was probably the
shortest hike we did in the first six months of caching. Also, from
where I lived, it was 7 miles away and the closest cache to my
house at the time.
Now, unless you live in extremely rural areas, it's next to
impossible to find a cache that far away from where you live.
They're everywhere!
This cache is hidden, not so much for the number, (although, if
you find it, you'll add another number to your cache find), or for
the swag inside it, but for the scenic value it provides. It will
get you away from most civilization for a couple of hours. The
hike, if you choose to continue will take you another four miles in
a loop back to the parking lot. There are several more caches along
this trail, and hopefully, in the near future, there will be more
to encourage more people to enjoy the beautiful open space we have
here. While placing the cache today, I saw a minumum of 5 raptors
of at least two different species. You can find deer, mountain
lions, snakes and tarantulas as well.
The picture on the right is near
the cache site, looking up at Potato Mountain. The other
picture on the left is looking down the canyon. Enjoy.
