Mosby strikes the B&O

The Civil War History;
On June 29th of 1864 there was a daring raid on the B&O Station and the Union soldiers protecting it by Lt. Col. John S. Mosby and his Partisian Raiders (43rd Battalion of the Virginia Calvary). While on thier way to support General Jubal A. Early’s raid on Washington.
Mosby’s men originally planned to interrupt Federal Communications by cutting telegraph wires and seizing a train, but after learning from a captured pickets a train would arrive at noon, just in about 15 minutes he quickly posted a howitzer on a knoll overlooking the depot, guardhouse and stockade.

Upon seeing the Howitzer and Mosby’s superior force the Federals surrendered. While awaiting the eastbound train, which was delayed, his men ransacked the depot, seized supplies and cut the Telegraph wires. Once realizing the train was not coming, Mosby set fire to most of the buildings and escaped with about 65 prisoners before Union forces could arrive and reoccupy the Depot.

Turning on French’s road from Shepardstown Pike you will encounter Two Historical Signs on your Right, One for the B&O Depot and Station and an Information board for Mosby’s Raid.
The B&O Depot is a little further in the wood line and near the tracks. As you will see the structure is far from revived and somewhat falling in on itself. Please look from afar and stay clear until it is renovated.

Room to pull off to the side of the road but the land is soft so use caution when exiting the black top. Sometimes a busy Road so be cautious if caching with kids and Always know their whereabouts. The small cache you seek hangs behind Information and awaits your input of Signatures added to your found log. Container is attached and screws off from the bottom. Container will fit very small trade items and some Smaller Trackables.
