I set up this cache to highlight a nice mountain bike loop in the area. It can be done by car as well, as long as the road is dry and you are careful.
Head N on Hwy 191 out of West Yellowstone. At N 44° 43.913, W111° 06.592 (just S of MM 5), turn onto Rainbow Point Road (FS 6954). Proceed about 3 miles to N 44° 45.409, W 111° 09.854. Turn left toward Horse Butte Lookout (FS 610). Park here and hop on your bike. Travel along this washboardy dirt road until you come to a junction with Horse Butte Lookout Road (FS 610A). You will ascend approximately 500 vertical feet on a moderate but smooth dirt road. You will be able to see a fire lookout perched on the hill. That is your goal and the cache site is nearby. Park at the picnic area on top. If you’re doing the cache in a car, retrace your route back down the road. DO NOT attempt the mountain bike route unless you have a very high clearance vehicle such as a truck or jeep.
To continue the loop ride, backtrack down the road for .6 miles until you come to a junction with a doubletrack trail at N 44° 45.322 W 111° 12.108. Turn R onto the doubletrack and follow it along the hilltop. The trail will drop down a hill and into the forest. After a slight rise in the trail, you will pass through a gate (leave the gates as you find them). The trail travels through wide-open meadows with views of Hebgen Lake and the surrounding mountains. You will come to another junction at N 44° 46.991 W 111° 13.394. The road to the right will take you on an optional 2½-mile loop. The road straight ahead will take you to my “Sow your wild oats” cache and your vehicle. Total mileage, including the extra loop is about 15 miles. Ride time is about 1 1/2 hours, but allow twice that for the caches and enjoying the views.
If you do this cache by mountain bike, please note it in your log. If there is enough interest, I may set up other bike caches. Have fun!
Obviously, if doing this cache by car it will be more like a 1.5/1.5 rating.
