Vista trail is located off old carriage road/trail that runs between Shelving Rock and Black Mt. Point on east side of Lake George. Most easily accessed by boat from Commisssion Pt. or Black Mt. PT. day use areas, but IS HIKEABLE from Shelving Rock Rd. Several other caches on this route. If boating, a docking permit is required from the NYS-DEC campground office on Glen Is. Fee is $8 per boat. Staff is helpfull with directions and info.
To reach trailhead (N43 34.780'-W073 34.562') proceed S from BMP or N from Comm. Pt. This portion is an easy walk. A sign at above coordinates will give additional directions. Trail is marked for horses. Hike .5 mile up trail to Vista (N43 34.514'-W073 34.455'). To this point, trail is steep with switchbacks and poor footing over rock. Take a few minutes to catch your breath and enjoy the views of the Narrows and Tongue Mt. Bring your camera or you'll be sorry. Continue on trail .1 mile where it finally levels.
