Clonmel Graveyard

No it's not a mistake. This is not Clonmel, County Tipperary. Clonmel, or “sweet meadow” is the name of this parish comprising the town of Cobh and its environs.

I hope this simple “Geo-tour” of this very international graveyard will whet your appetite to learn more about the history of the town of Cobh, formerly Queenstown and Cove, and its links to major historic events and figures.
More information on all the subjects covered by this geocache can be found by an internet search. I would also recommend visiting GC153V8, thirty kilometres south west of here and the monument near to it which commemorates one of the same tragic events referred to here.
Cobh town is also worth visiting. Go to www.visitcobh.com and www.seeyouincobh.com

You can reach the graveyard by public transport to Cobh and a worthwhile walk of about 2 kilometers, although it is uphill.....in both directions! The cache is nearby to some supermarkets and a filling station where you can get refreshments and the Supervalu centre also has a small cafe and toilets.
Please give the graveyard and its occupants their due respect. The graveyard is still in use and you're likely to come across the family and friends of people buried here.
Please also take care particularly in the old part of the graveyard around the church. Do not stand or lean on tombs or gravestones as some may be unsafe.

I'd like to thank Hendrick and Jack for their help.
I hope you enjoy your journey through history.

STAGE 1. You start at the grand tomb of James Verling. Take note of his date of birth. You'll need this number later. While he was associated to a very famous person for a short while he never became as famous as our next stop:

STAGE 2. Possibly Cobh's most famous son. Take note of this man's age at death and the year of his birth. The headstone also lets us know what he was famous for. He wasn't the only person in this graveyard to call himself J Doyle. Go to the next point to find out more at :

STAGE 3. We are now at the Commonwealth war graves and this young gunner's year of death is what you need to write down. Just a few meters away is the grave enclosure of some other servicemen that died some years before:

STAGE 4. In this enclosure you'll see a number of individual grave markers. Count these but also see how many people are buried here. On the anniversary of this tragedy a baby girl was born and she is now buried in a nearby mass grave. You can visit a monument to her at:

STAGE 5. To me one of the saddest inscriptions in this graveyard. Perhaps surprisingly, not the youngest victim of the tragic event that caused her death. How old was she (in years) when she died?

You can now work out the coordinates of the final stage.

The numbers are N 51°5A.AAA' W008°BB.BBC'
You might need a piece of paper!

AAAA: Boxer's age multiplied by two added to the last two digits of the gunner's year of death. Subtract this figure from the boxer's year of birth to give you AAAA.

BBBB: The year of James Verling's birth added to Sheila Ferrier's age when she died is BBBB.

C: The difference in number between marked and unmarked graves in the Mars plot multiplied by two.

Please remember: The Cache container is not inside the graveyard and you do not have to enter private property or undergrowth to access the cache container.
