Geocache Description:

Dr. George P. Donehoo described the location for this cache in 1925 thus; “The view from the mountain above Rockville, of the long, sweeping river, the ranges of mountains, and the long stone-arched bridge of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the longest bridge of its kind in the world, with the long reaches of the Cumberland Valley to the southward, make this view one of the most fascinatingly beautiful to be seen anywhere.”

This cache is located on an old portion of what was known as the Darlington Trail. The challenge in finding this cache will be figuring out how to get to it without trespassing on private property. The reward will be a hike along the crest of Blue Mountain and an awesome view of the Susquehanna River, the Cumberland Valley, and the Rockville Bridge, the longest stone arch bridge in the world. In March of 2002, the Rockville Bridge celebrates its 100 anniversary. This cache is in honor of that anniversary.

Use of aerial photographs and topographic maps will not be very helpful in finding the route to this cache. What appears to be a short hike is blocked by private property and “no trespassing” signs. Roads shown on topographic maps are gated and now on private property. The shortest route is a climb up a steep mountain face, not a recommended route for this cache. If you find that you have to start by bushwhacking to a trail, you aren’t starting in the right place and are trespassing (the area on the sides of the mountain have been developed since the topographic maps were made). Also, there are some power line cuts in the woods that could be used to shorten the hike, but they are posted “no trespassing” also. PLEASE, respect them.

When you find the correct parking spot, you will be about a mile as the crow flies from the cache. Assuming you don’t make any wrong turns, the round trip hike is approximately 2.1 miles. The hike appears level, but has about a 200’ elevation change over the mile. The trail starts out wide and smooth but becomes narrow and rocky. You will come to an old rusty gate and private property sign at about .50 miles in the hike, bear to your right and you will see the narrow trail to follow and avoid the private property.

After you find the cache, you will definitely want to go another 750 along the trail to the overlook.

Don’t forget to mark the parking spot as a waypoint. It will help finding your way back to the car as there are cross trails that all lead onto private property and not back to your car! (I have left the correct parking spot coordinates in the cache)

Original contents of the cache are a railroad engine tree ornament, lantern key chains, mini travel card decks, US Flag pins, a copy of The Prayer of Jabez, batteries, multi-function pocket knife, etc.
