This cache is inspired by Shakespeare's tragedy King
Lear. As I was searching for a location for the final, I
came across a large object with three smaller objects nearby. This
reminded me of the father and his three daughters in the play. The
father is keeping his distance from the daughters. The cache is
kept by Cordelia - the only daughter who is true. A synopsis of the
play as well as the full text can be found here. There have been several film adaptations
- the most recent stars Brian Blessed in the title
role. And, there was a television
adaptation with Laurence Olivier in the main role.
I saw the National Theatre production of this play with Anthony
Hopkins (before he became better known as a movie star) in the lead
role back in 1987. A great experience!
This play also contains my favorite Shakespeare quote. The quote
strikes me as true today as it was over 400 years ago. I don't
think anything has been written that is so true about man and his
ideas of justice. If you look around in the news, at work,
anywhere, you'll see examples.
"Through tatter'd clothes small vices
do appear;
Robes and furr'd gowns hide all.
Plate sin with gold, And the strong lance of justice hurtless
breaks:
Arm it in rags, a pigmy's straw does pierce it."
(Act IV, Scene VI)
Like all my other Shakespeare caches, you do not have to read
the play to find the cache.
The Area
The cache is located in Legacy Park in Bedford. The Bedford Cross Country Ski Club has done an excellent
job of building and maintaining the trails throughout this area. A
the neaby cache Bendo Hunt already provides a fun tour of the
area, but this cache will take you deeper into the area allowing
you to explore more of the trail system. There are several streams and brooks
through the area and you'll cross at least two of them on the way
to the cache. Enjoy the area!
Please Note
- The area is closed dusk to dawn.
- The cache is a medium sized lock & lock.
- The cache is within 100' of a trail.
- Please don't try to access this cache from nearby roads. You'll
be trespassing on private property or going through some
potentially hazardous areas.
