Well, Kewlfocus and I (Rockhopjohn), were bored out of our mind, so we decided to go hide the cache tonight. There is no more thrilling experience than hiding a cache deep in the woods at 11:30 PM. This cache is a good bit harder to get to than my first cache (Rock's Triangle). High ground clearance is an absolute must, and unless you are very comfortable taking your vehicle off road, you probably would be smart take something 4 wheel drive.
This cache is at a place called Hickory Landing, in the Ocala National Forest. It is just a few miles from Rock's Triangle, but it is just that much deeper in the woods. If you haven't been to Rock's Triangle, these two caches would make a good day trip.
Just to summarize, if your drive to the cache (as opposed to taking a rather long walk), you will probably have to get wet. You basically have two options, you can ford the Tracy Canal, on Forest Service Road 539, or you can drive through a big mud hole coming from Deerhaven Road (NFS 540), the depth of the hole is dependent upon the amount of rain, look below for a picture of the hole at its worst. My recommendation is to come from 539.
The cache is in a small ammo box, this one includes items that are more desireable, given the fact that the cache is harder to find. I have included a Mini Maglite, a Snakebite/First Aid Kit, a pocket knife, a can of bug spray, a bottle of StingEze, and 4 pack of AA batteries. I have also included a logbook and a waterproof disposable camera. Take your picture if you like, but please leave the camera with the logbook. Also please tell me which exposure you are so that I can match a name with a face when I develop the film.
The GPS will get you close to the cache, but the cheat will really narrow it down, so only use it if you have to. I hope you have a good time finding this one, and I hope that you really enjoy the spot.
