"Rocking Stone" is a glarcial erratic that resides in the Town of
Barre's Rocking Stone Park. Parking is at a small dirt pull off
along Rocking Stone road. Youcan follow the short trail right to
the Rocking Stones.
Nearly all of Massachusetts was once covered by glaciers.
These
glaciers rounded off mountains, changed the course of streams,
and
left hundreds of ponds and lakes. Glacial deposits in the form
of
clay, stones, and boulders cover most of the state. The
Rocking
Stones here are an example of one of these deposits. From
Wikipedia: "A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that deviates
from
the size and type of rock native to the area in which it rests;
the
name "erratic" is based on the errant location of these
boulders.
These rocks were carried to their current locations by
glacial
ice."
To get credit for this Earthcache you will need to have a
camera and a tape measure.
You must: 1) Take and post at least one picture of your group and
gps with the rocking stones in the background. If you are alone a
picture of your gps sitting on the stone will do.
2) On the bottom stone look for a face that is carved into the
rock. Figure out the area of the flat surface in
square feet.
3) Estimate the overall height of both stones.
4) Email me the answers to #2 and 3.
DO NOT POST THESE ANSWERS IN YOUR LOG!
Extra credit to those that CITO. ( A warm and fuzzy feeling of
having done something good.) There is sometimes cans and bottles
left in this area.
Of course you must practice LEAVE NO TRACE!

January 7 by ShirleyG (534 found) Brisk day but decided to try this cache. Had my daughter-in-law Heather and two of my grandchildren Emelia & Mayzie with me today. Snow was deep and the rocks underneath were slippery. The girls had to go back to the car as they were cold but Heather & I got the necessary information needed to log the cache. Thanks for the interesting erratic.

October 25, 2009 by ~Bailey~ (5337 found) Got permission to log this the other day ago. Sorry we're so slow (at least I am) to post a photo. Math and eyeballing judgements are off but even this grainy phone photo will verify we were there again. Thanks for bringing us back here again. Jean & Bob
