Nice quiet bluff located in Amherst, North of Route 9. Some basic
climbing and heights are involved so be careful with small kids and
pets. Ice and snow will make this site very difficult and
dangerous.
Nice spot to get away from it all, this location is frequented by
ATVers, hikers, rock climbers, and an occasional ambitious mountian
biker, not to mention deer, moose, turkey vultures, hawks and other
critters. No heavy rock climbing is required, but if climbing is
your thing bring your gear and take the "short" route. It is
possible to get about a half mile from the cache with a 2WD vehicle
with moderate ground clearance in dry weather, and even closer with
an ATV. Cache is a camouflaged ammo box. The original booty nuggets
include several unique items, as well as the first two of my Maine
Sights CDs - check my geocaching page for details. A camera is
included so take a pic of yourself at the location while signing
the log book. There are numerous ways to access this cache from all
directions. Getting to the site itself should prove challenging if
you do not use either of the routes suggested below. Original
route: Intersection 1, Route 9 - N 44º 49.573 W 068º 24.957: Go
north. Parking for equipped climbers - N 44º 50.939 W 068º 27.192
Intersection 2 - N 44º 51.183 W 068º 28.078: Go northeast Trail
head - N 44º 51.399 W 068º 27.238: Go southeast Alternative route,
to avoid failing bridge. Road however is rougher, but passable with
a vehicle with decent ground clearance. Intersection 1, Route 9 - N
44º 49.294 W 068º 29.756: Go north. Intersection 2 - N 44º 49.672 W
068º 29.376: Go north Intersection 3 - N 44º 50.257 W 068º 29.910:
Go north Intersection 4 - N 44º 51.555 W 068º 28.566: Go southeast
Intersection 5 - N 44º 51.183 W 068º 28.078: Go northeast Trail
head - N 44º 51.399 W 068º 27.238: Go southeast Note: The last leg
of these instructions is becoming more and more dense with brush.
It is drivable, but watch the brush, or park before the trail head
and walk in from there.
