Geocache Description:

This F.S. road will take to a cemetery if you chose to go onward from the cache.  This cemetery was the final resting place to those residents of Miller Grove an African American Settlment located in Southern Illinois.

Nearby is Crow Knob. Crow Knob was said to be a religous meeting place for those in the community.  There is a cache near this location as well, GC5K302

Miller Grove ~ In the 1840's a community of emancipated families from Tennessee bought land north of present day Glendale, and began a farming community that became known as Miller Grove. The community built a church and a school. A large cemetery holds over one hundred graves, many unmarked and some with tombstones (most now a days unreadable). Archaeological investigations are continuing at this site which now lays within the Shawnee National Forest. It will eventually be an interpreted site open to visitors. I will add the coordinates to the settlement once I have the exact location confirmed, however, there is nothing left standing at the settlement that I am aware of.

The SNF visitor centers have a brochure on " African American Settlements in Southern Illinois" for the asking.

This cache is placed per Shawnee Nat'l Forest Service policy and procedure. (visit link)
