Finger Rock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Kosh Naranek: As this cache has been in need of maintenance for a period well in excess of the "few weeks" contemplated by the guidelines, and there's been no further action on repairing this cache, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache in the immediate future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it."

Geocache Description:

Off Camp Rock Road in Johnson Valley OHV area.

                        Finger Rock

This cache is in one of our favorite quad riding areas, Johnson Valley. The cache was placed by Tony, Vicki, Beth & Melanie of GeoTeam  Maggi and Mike, Linda, Samantha and Micheal of the Davies.

The area has plenty flat desert, trails and rock formations. One of our favorite formations is in the Ord Mountain range. We call it  Finger Rock.  When choosing a cache location, we figured that this was a great place. Besides the interesting rock formation, you get nice views of the Lucerne and Fry Valleys.

Please treadlightly! You can get to this cache entirely on signed, open routes large enough to accommodate a 4 wheel drive vehicle. A two wheel drive vehicle can easily get within a quarter mile of the cache. The last quarter mile is a bit rougher on vehicles -- four wheel drive recommended. A Quad can get within 100 feet or so. To get to the cache, use Camp Rock Road. Cars or other large vehicles can leave the road at N 34° 32.026'  W 116° 49.144' . Quads can leave the road at this point or further east at N 34° 33.993  W 116° 46.800'. Take signed route OM30 to signed route OM10. The cache is about 4 1/2 miles from the west interchange with Camp Rock Road and about 3 1/2 miles from the east one.

The cache is a camouflaged ammo tin. The camo was painted to match the desert so look closely.

Original contents included:

 • 5 Where's George dollar bills
 • Plush Bear
 • 2 WWJD lanyards
 • 2 smiley-face super balls
 • Corkscrew
 • tape measure/level
 • 4 small plastic toys
 • snap bracelet

Enjoy the cache and enjoy the views. Be careful where you step. The area inside the "boulder line"  is currently being re-vegetated.

Johnson Valley is a varied landscape for the off-highway vehicle driver. It is punctuated by steep red rocky mountains, rolling hills, open valleys, dry lake beds and sandy washes. Elevations range from 4,600 feet at Hartwell Hills to 2,300 feet at Melville Dry Lake. Vegetation consists of creosote scrub, annual grasses, wild flowers and Joshua Trees.

Have a great time.We hope you enjoy our desert cache!!
