Faro situado a la entrada de la Ría de Avilés en Asturias. Aparcar cerca del faro!

En las proximidades del emplazamiento actual del Faro se encontraba una batería de artillería para defensa de la ría de los ataques de corsarios ingleses. En una incursión de éstos, los cañones fueron arrojados al agua. Parte del material de la batería se utilizó en la construcción del faro en 1863.
A 8 millas marinas (cerca de 15 Km..) del faro -y según miras hacia alta mar, a mano izquierda- se encuentra el cañón submarino de Avilés, el más profundo del mundo, según F. P. Shepard y R. F. Dill, expertos en esta materia geológica. El cañón origina una fosa de cerca de 4.750 metros de profundidad, creando un paraíso marítimo, aún inexplorado por su enorme calado.
