The cache is located outside the cemetery in the village of Barnwell.
Mormon settlers founded this community around about 1902 and called it Woodpecker, after Woodpecker Island in the Oldman River. In 1908, the area was renamed Bountiful but was later renamed Barnwell because there was another community named Bountiful. It was named Barnwell after a family with a long record of service to the CPR. Richard G. Barnwell was a 50-year employee who served as a purchasing agent in Winnipeg. His brother, William Barnwell (1828-1915), was an assistant road master and yard foreman in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. William’s sons, Edward and Ernest, served as station agents. Many of the settlers during this time were coal miners employed by various mines in the area.
Barnwell is a small community with several attractions such as a seniors centre, a skate park, a K-9 school, a public library, three parks and a church. It was incorporated as a village in 1980.
