 There are two different sides to Door County today. There's the over-crowded and overpriced touristy Door County, and the harder to find, secluded, undeveloped Door County. In placing my Door County caches, I try to expose people to the more hidden, underexposed, yet still fascinating areas. While not the most difficult cache to get to in Door County (that would be my own Horseshoe Hideaway) The Gardner Swamp Wildlife Area is an area often overlooked by the typical visitor.
The wildlife refuge is 1,112 acres, all state owned, between Brussels and Sturgeon Bay. Principal wildlife include deer, waterfowl, ruffed grouse, rabbits & raccoons. Recreational activities (in addition to Geocaching!) include birdwatching, canoeing, berry and mushroom picking and hunting.
I orginally planned to place this cache smack dab in the center of the swamp, adjacent to the creek that runs through the swamp, but concluded that it would be too difficult to for the average Geocacher to reach, so I made it far easier by placing at the current coordinates. There are many roads that dead-end into the swamp, so I won't tell you which one is closest to the cache. A clue to the oblivious: a swamp may have water and mosquitos. HOWEVER, the entire wildlife area is not swamp, and there is even an elevated walkway. Good luck!
