Pertinent portion of Squam Range from Squam

What with their boulder caves, cliff ladders, wide open views, and a convenient loop, Mts. Percival and Morgan certainly can't be equaled for a spectacular adventuresome hike in the Squam Range.

But the hike along the Crawford-Ridgepole trail from Percival to Squam has its own understated glory, and is most certainly the trail less traveled. That's why, in celebration of my 500th find, I decided to choose this spot to place my first mountain cache.

The only practical way to get to Mt Squam is from another mountaintop, be it Percival's from the west or Doublehead's from the east.

I believe the shortest way to the cache is to park at the Mt. Percival trailhead and climb 1.9 miles to Percival. The container is about 1.4 miles from the summit of Percival, so that makes for a 6.6-mile round trip.

To get all three Squam Range caches, you could do what SquamDog and I did: we parked at the Mt. Morgan trailhead and hiked Mt. Morgan, went over to Percival, popped over to hide the Squam cache, returned to descend the Percival trail, and then used the .4-mile Morse trail (not shown) to return to the Morgan trailhead. That circuit was almost exactly 8 miles. (And I discovered that my dog is in much better shape than I am.)
