Very traditional cache with great view of Mt. St. Helens. Access via Hunting/Logging roads near Merrill Lake. High clearance vehicle recommended, but not absolutely required.
Called Steve's Secret Stash, because this is a area that my brother-in-law Steve has frequented since childhood. As we were driving to the spot we got to hear many stories about his adventures hunting with family and much more.
This is as traditional of a cache as it gets. One of the few areas with an up close view of the mountain that is just outside the volcano monument land on forest service land. Because of this you can still get to it when the area is closed because the mountain puffs a little. If you’re a *serious* four wheel drive person or on ATV’s you can drive right to the cache. If you are in a car/truck you can get to within a 1/2 mile of the cache. These are one-lane logging/hunting roads with large potholes so this is not a place for the Lincoln Town Car.
Once at the cache site you will be treated with a great view of Mt St. Helens. You can also overlook the area where some of the first Geocaches were placed.
Since the maze of forest service and logging roads is pretty crazy for those not familiar with the area, I will provide waypoints below from a major state road to the cache recommended parking. If you have a mapping GPS with topo maps of the area, this cache will make you feel good about the extra money you spent. Using something like USAPhotomaps/Topo!/TopoUSA to research the route, or even print a map would not hurt either.
