Geocache Description:

Number 3 in a series placed near Old Lime Creek Road, this cache is in a rather blasted
looking ravine above the confluence of Crater Creek (outflow of Crater Lake) and Lime Creek.
Park or take short 4WD road into the abyss at about N 37 41.348 W 107 45.129

Terrain is a factor here. There are significant hazards from drop-offs and loose rock. Some nearby cliffs are rather hidden until you're upon them. Satellite reception can be a bit dodgy.

Cache is small ammo box near some puny raspberry bushes. Originally contained Tilt Gauge, 2 mini-slinkys, 2 rubber ducks, and an Annie's Orphans hat.

The creek below is said to be kayakable when the flow is just right.

Old Lime Creek Road (Forest Rd 591) bypasses Coal Bank Pass on US 550. South end starts at about Colorado/US 550 Mile 51.3, north end at mile 59.6. Area is fairly high in scenic, geologic, and historic interest. This was once part of the highway between Durango and Silverton. Some interesting engineering examples from a bygone era. Road is maintained for most vehicles. Easy access from north to this cache. Southern half of road is quite rocky in places; a bit of clearance is helpful, or small size and willingness to dodge the obstacles.

Cnegyl va funyybj orqebpx avpur, cnegyl pbirerq ol gnyhf. [Look for an aspen tree at N37 41.415 W107 45.069 with the inscription "MER OCT 7TH 1956" (at the time of this writing, this is just 2 months shy of being officially an historic archaeological feature). Cache is about 73' on a true bearing of 200 degrees. Magnetic declination here was 11.08 deg east on July 9, 2006. Cache is about 58' @ 284 true from the point the "prehistoric UFO crash site" photo was taken at N37 41.402 W107 45.063. Note fairly tall but very slender spruce tree slightly above and to right (north) of cache. Want one more? Cache is about 30' @ 51 true from N37 41.402 W107 45.077, and cache, slender spruce, and MER tree are roughly in line. ***This area requires a degree of surefooted-ness and is not safe for young children!*** Garmin Gremlins 8/6/06]
