Geocache Description:

½ litre plastic clip-box box containing a log book and pencil and the usual other bits and bobs. On top of Carrock Fell under a large stone, about 50 feet below and 200 feet in distance from the summit on the north eastern side. There's parking below Carrock Fell at Calebreck (NNE of the summit) with an ascent of 1300' on a relatively easy path and a jumble of rocks at the top. It can be very boggy in places after rain.

The cache is just under the summit of Carrock Fell (situated above Mungrisdale) – one of Alfred Wainwright's tops. There's a lot of interest for the geologist on Carrock Fell, as it consists not only of Skiddaw slate but also pink Skiddaw granite and volcanic rocks known as 'gabbro' of which the Black Cuellin in Skye are formed. There's much evidence of mining in the area and Carrock Mine was well known for its supply of Wolfram. The summit itself is ringed by the collapsed walls of an ancient hill fort of unknown age and origin. The remains are scattered all over the summit and no one would realise there was a fort there unless they read the history of the area. The cache itself is under an outcrop of rock which is part of the general mass of stones that make up the summit of Carrock Fell. No ancient artefacts have been interfered with in placing the cache! The OS map places the title of 'fort' further round to the eastern side of the Fell.
