Geocache Description:

This cache is the first in an occasional series of Crystal Palace Football Club related caches. Partly they aim to celebrate events or individuals and also try to make up for the limited pre-match caching opportunities! #1 in the series was set on Saturday 22nd January 2011 to celebrate Dougie Freedman's first home game in charge since being appointed manager. Dougie already has hero status at Selhurst Park, hopeflly this will remain intact! Freedman began his career with QPR 1992, but never made their first team. He moved to Third Division Barnet on a free transfer in July 1994, scoring 24 goals in his debut season. He moved to Palace for £800,000 in September 1995. and scorded 20 times during his first season at Selhurst Park including, the fastest hat-trick in Crystal Palace's league history – 11 minutes – against Grimsby Town on 5 March 1996. The following season, he helped Palace to the promotion play-offs. He then scored crucial goals in the 89th and 90th minutes of the semi final tie with Wolves after coming off the bench with 17 minutes left. Palace went on to win promotion in the Wembley final, beating Sheffield United 1–0. Freedman only played 7 times in the Premier League before he was sold to Wolves. His spell with the club only lasted until the end of the 1997–98 season. Despite being the team's top goalscorer he was sold to Nottingham Forest for £950,000 in August 1998. Nottingham Forest offered Freedman his first full season in the top flight in 1998–99, but his nine goals couldn't prevent relegation. He remained with the club for a further full season before rejoining Crystal Palace in October 2000, this time for £600,000. This season saw perhaps his most famous goal for the club. Relegation to the third tier loomed in their final game of the season at Stockport County, with three minutes left and no score. Dramatically, Freedman then scored the vital goal that kept Palace in the division, and relegated Huddersfield Town. The following campaign saw him earn a call-up to the Scottish national team (2 appearances; 1 goal), to add to his earlier Under 21 caps. During the 2005/6 season, he scored his 100th and 101st goals for Crystal Palace in a 3–2 win at rivals Brighton & Hove Albion. This made him only the seventh player in Palace history to have scored 100 goals for the club. During the 2007/8 season, Freedman was reserve team manager at Palace as well as playing for the first team until he moved to League One club Leeds United on loan. After his testimonial match to reward him for ten years' service at the club over two spells, Freedman moved to Southend United on a free transfer where he had played and coached. In March 2010, Freedman returned to Crystal Palace as assistant manager to Paul Hart, helping secure survival for the Eagles on the last day of the season. He started the 2010/11 season as assistant manager under George Burley. When Burley was sacked on New Years' Day 2011, Freedman was given the role of Caretaker Manager until he was made the official manager of Crystal Palace signing a 2 and a half year deal on 11th January 2011. The original cache was a magnetic 35mm canister. It was placed 30 minutes before the match on 22/01/11 in front of a crowd of 14,128! This didn't last very long and I have now replaced it (in front of a crowd of 19,344) with a black magnetic nano - located even closer to the stadium! The cache is now a very small tube (with a clear cap) and is even closer to the stadium. It is not magnetic. Tweezers might be handy to extract the log./ As GPS readings were variable, I have used Google maps for the coordinates, but you may need this hint to help you locate the cache. When logging your find electronically, it would be interesting to share who (if anyone) you support. I'd also like to see who's brave enough to try to find it on match days - remember that's when it was placed. CONGRATULATIONS - Joint FTF: The Lion Man, Rolo2286 and The Creepy Crawlies SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS - FTF on a match day: Plundermot (in front of 21,000 muggles and me)
