Geocache Description:

The cache is situated at the site of some San rock paintings, and is a short hike from the Geelhoutbos camp in the Baviaanskloof.

The Geelhoutbos camp is operated by the Eastern Cape Parks Board, and is situated in an exquisitely beautiful kloof. There are five pre-fab chalets, and a somewhat basic campsite for tents. Peace and quite is the name of the game, thanks to the camp's relative inaccessibility - the road through the Baviaanskloof (from the Patensie side) is atrocious and requires a high ground clearance vehicle plus fortitude. However, the rugged and spectacular mountain scenery is ample compensation.

To find the cache, follow the jeep track that leaves the camp site at S 33º 38.086' E 24º 14.740'. After about 1 km turn left at S 33º 38.281' E 24º 14.493' onto a rocky trail. This trail is not very obvious, so keep a sharp look-out for the small cairns of stones that mark the route. After about 300 metres the trail brings you to a cave in which the San dwelt. Many of the paintings have weathered rather badly, but there are still some very recognisable figures. The trail continues past the cave for another 30 metres or so, passing the cache site, and ends at the site of more paintings that are very well preserved.

The container is the usual 2 litre ice cream tub, and the original contents are
- cache note
- logbook & gel pen
- 2x size AA manganese batteries
- toy car
- key ring with tape measure.

Enjoy!

PS 12 April 2010. Over the past 10 years or so we have seen this lovely resort deteriorate due to the indifference of the staff. We were even witness to new arrivals being told "we are full" simply because staff had been too tired to service chalets which had been occupied two days before. Closure was inevitable. Perhaps best to give this one a miss unless special arrangements are made. See log entry by 'carlstein' dated 30 Mar 2010.
