Cape Fear and Frying Pan Shoals on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Only accessable by passenger ferry, then a 2 mile adventure on your choice of transportation, hike, bike ride, or rent a Golf Cart. This is an historical peek into many ships that sunk near this very "Graveyard of the Atlantic"
Bald Head Island is a WONDERFUL place for caching, yet there are only two available caches as of this date placed here. This is an attempt to help fellow cachers find a few more interesting things to do while visiting Bald Head Island (it is rather expensive to actually get here--Passenger ferry is $15.00 per person) No traditional caches may be placed here, as this is a pristine island that is guarded very carefully. Frequent tropical storms, and hurricanes would also affect the placement of caches--hence the virtual caches are perfect for BHI.
CAPE FEAR AND FRYING PAN SHOALS is an underwater labrynth of sand bars that stretches for 20 miles into the Atlantic Ocean, varying in depth from 3' to 15', causing frequent shipwrecks. One of North Carolina's 3 great capes collectively known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
These treacherous waters are part of the reason for it's name.
