Alminhas
“Alminhas” são um património artístico-religioso que ocupam pontos estratégicos nas freguesias. São sinais de vivência religiosa mas não se separam da vivência física do território. As duas alminhas que existem na freguesia localizam-se à entrada para a Lomba do Loução e na Estrada Regional no final da Lomba do Loução. Esta última possui estações da via-sacra.
A lenda de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Parece que, pelo século VII, invadido pelos sarracenos o território do atual Concelho, os cristãos, receosos que uma imagem da Virgem, muito venerada, fosse profanada pelos infiéis, a procuraram esconder numa gruta cavada nos rochedos das imediações do Cabo Carvoeiro. E aí ficou a imagem, a coberto de assaltos e sacrilégios.
Entretanto, pelos fins do século XII e durante o reinado de D. Afonso Henriques, um criminoso, fugido à justiça, procurou refúgio nas cavernas da costa ocidental da Ilha, posto que era a única salvação para a sua liberdade ameaçada. Por um acaso providencial, foi esse criminoso acolher-se à mesma gruta onde, quinhentos anos antes, a imagem da Virgem havia sido escondida. Maravilhado com a sua descoberta, não se atreveu, todavia, a dar parte dela no povoado, aguardando que alguém se aproximasse; mas não se conteve que a não revelasse a um grupo de crianças que, ali perto, se entretinha a brincar nos rochedos.
As crianças, surpreendidas, correram a dar a notícia a seus pais e, em breve, toda a gente da povoação se achegava a admirar o achado precioso.
Com receio de que, ali tão perto do mar, não ficasse a imagem resguardada de assaltos e profanações, resolveram os habitantes da terra levá-la para a igreja de S. Vicente, em Peniche de Cima; porém, de todas as vezes que o tentaram, a imagem desaparecia misteriosamente do templo, tornando a aparecer na mesma gruta onde fora encontrada. Certos de que isso correspondia à vontade da Senhora, ergueram no local uma capelinha, começando por cavar a golpes de picão o nicho onde a Virgem aparecera, justamente aquela que ocupa a reentrância do lado esquerdo do corpo da atual capela de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.
Consta que, antigamente, sempre que vestiam quaisquer trajes ou mantos à imagem, estes eram encontrados depois caídos a seus pés, como se a Virgem se contentasse apenas com os trajos esculpidos na própria figura. E diz ainda o povo que, numa cruz natural existente à entrada da capela, do lado direito, sempre que acontecia dar-se alguma graça por intercessão da Senhora, apareciam, sobre cada um dos orifícios dos cravos, três gotas de água puríssima, como pérolas brilhantes…
Freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios
Nossa Senhora dos Remédios é uma freguesia do concelho da Povoação, ilha de São Miguel, Açores, com 12,66 km² de área e 1 112 habitantes (2011). Densidade: 87,8 hab/km². Localiza-se a uma latitude 37 Norte e a uma longitude 27 Oeste, estando a uma altitude de 70 metros.
Situada numa das encostas da Povoação, a freguesia de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios é constituída pelas Lombas do Loução e Alcaide, elevada a esta condição em 1957. Foi uma zona de produção de trigo, estando hoje as terras quase inteiramente dedicadas à pastagem para o gado leiteiro.
O topónimo de “Loução”, atribuído à Lomba, teve a sua origem no nome de um João de Loução, personalidade dos meados do século XVI, que construiu numa entrada da Bacia da Povoação uma caravela. Por sua vez, o nome da outra Lomba, indica o lugar onde tiveram assento os Ferreiras de Azevedo, que foram Alcaides da Povoação no século XVII.
Com 1.072 habitantes e sendo a terceira freguesia mais populosa do concelho, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios vive, sobretudo, da agro-pecuária.
Dos pratos típicos podemos destacar a sopa de feijão, os torresmos, a sopa de funcho com favas, as papas grossas e a açorda de feijão com pimenta da terra salgada.
Quem passar por esta freguesia terá, obrigatoriamente, de visitar alguns itinerários turísticos de referência, como os Miradouros do Pico Longo e do Pôr-do-sol, o Museu do Trigo e a Herdade do Monte Simplício, embora, este último, de propriedade privada.
A VILA DA POVOAÇÃO
A Povoação é uma vila na ilha de São Miguel, Região Autónoma dos Açores, com cerca de 2 100 habitantes.
É sede de um município com 110,30 km² de área e 6 327 habitantes (2011), subdividido em 6 freguesias. O município é limitado a norte pelos municípios da Ribeira Grande e de Nordeste, a oeste por Vila Franca do Campo e tem costa no oceano Atlântico a leste e sul.
É constituída pelo centro, arredores - Comissão e Morro - e pelas Lombas do Cavaleiro, Carro, Botão, Pomar e Pós. A designação de Lomba do Cavaleiro deverá ter tido origem num habitante local, o abastado proprietário Martim Vaz, o chamado Cavaleiro do Nordeste. “ A denominação “Lomba do Carro”, teve a sua origem talvez por ter sido esta a primeira lomba a ter ligação com o centro da povoação por caminho de carro de bois. O topónimo “Lomba do Botão”, segundo o investigador Humberto de Bettencourt dever-se-á à forma corrupta de Vultão ou “Bultão”, nome próprio de um individuo que ali viveu antigamente. Na origem do nome Lomba do Pomar, está o facto de ali terem existido grandes pomares de castanheiros. A Lomba dos Pós talvez pela deformação forçada das palavras “Lomba do Pão”.
