Geocache Description:

This cache is within the OKEHAMPTON FIRING RANGE.

Before you plan your visit you MUST check the DARTMOOR FIRING NOTICE.

For information see: (visit link)

Do not attempt this cache if there is firing on the Okehampton Ranges. Do not go past the Range Marker posts when the Range Flags (Red Fags) are Flying.

Do not pick up any object in the area due to the fact that it is a Military Training Area where Troops use "Blank Ammunition".

Fordsland Ledge itself is fairly unremarkable. But, it is worth using as a 'waypoint' getting to and from High Willhays from the Meldon area - thus avoiding the worst bogs and clitter fields.
Beside the military clutter, there is a prehistoric cairn and the views S into the moor and the valley below make it a worthwhile trip. Great Links Tor also adds its brooding presence. Compare it to the tiny (by comparison) Links Tor below you.
The cache is a Pill Pot containing a log in a 35mm film pot but no pen.

(If you want to make a walk of it, can I suggest you take the following route. Park at the Meldon Dam car park - where there are toilets. Walk over the dam and turn left down the steps. Go downstream to 'Viaduct View'. Then turn up the Red-a-Ven Brook valley and follow the stream uphill to 'Get Your Head Down' and 'Lido-Yes Tor'. Continue up, joining the military track before turning left on the col to 'West Mill Tor'. Reverse your course and follow the elephant track up 'Yes Tor', 'High Willhays' and on to 'Fordsland Ledge'. Drop down to 'Black Tor' - following animal tracks through the featherbed is best. If you want to take in 'Shelstone Tor' as well, drop straight down to the river and then up 100 m before rising slowly up animal tracks to Shelstone. Then back to Meldon. Alternatively go from Black Tor to the track bend at N50 41.809 W004 01.568 and then curl around Longstone Hill back to the dam. Hope you enjoy the walk and the caches.)
