MATA DA DOCA SÃO MIGUEL AÇORES

Na transição do Séc. XIX para o XX com avultada actividade em 1902, das barrocas e runas resultantes das explorações das “pedreiras da doca” o Engº Dinis Moreira da Mota projectou e impulsionou aquela que se destinava a ser a maior zona arborizada de Ponta Delgada; o “Parque da Alegria” como o seu criador admitiu chamar-lhe: Parque Engº Dinis da Mota” como oficialmente depois foi designado, “MATA DA DOCA”, como todos em Santa Clara lhe chamavam e como ficou popularmente conhecida. A frondosa e luxiriante “MATA DA DOCA” a partir de meados do Séc. XX foi sendo aos poucos mutilada. Primeiro na década de sessenta com a construção dos depósitos da POL-NATO, o que obrigou a destruir, talvez, o maior conjunto de araucárias da Europa. Depois já em democracia, foi o “Pepom”, que também ajudou a desvastar e descaracterizar parte substancial do local. Para finalmente, já nas décadas de 80/90, em consequência do prolongamento do aeroporto, que quase soterrou por completo toda aquela área, pouco faltar para todo aquele pulmão verde desaparecer por completo. De facto, da imensa área que constituia a “MATA DA DOCA” 220,900 m2 registou com detalhe Gil Mont’Alverne de Sequeira em 1905-,apenas sobrou o espaço que, depois da espectacular requalificação de que foi alvo se transformou no “Jardim Padre Fernando. in João Pacheco de Melo
