Tangram Trail Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

CacheDetectives: Once again, the lid wasn't on one of the cache containers tight enough to keep the rain out. All of the pieces in that cache were ruined. Instead of recreating all of the pieces again, I'm going to archive this one to make room for some new mathematically challenging caches. Thanks to all who visited. I hope you enjoyed the puzzle.

Geocache Description:

The Tangram Trail is a multicache where each stop contains a tan (puzzle piece). Once you collect all the pieces, you should be able to make a square. The final stop is a regular cache in an ammo box.

In Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) promotes developing geometry understandings and spatial skills through puzzle-like problems with Tangrams. Describing figures and visualizing what they look like when they are transformed through rotations or flips or are put together or taken apart in different ways are important aspects of geometry experience.

Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles, originally thought to be a game for women and children. Tangrams were brought to Europe and America when trade with China was opened during the 19th Century. In 1903, Sam Loyd wrote his great spoof of tangram history, The Eighth Book Of Tan. He had many people convinced that the game was invented 4000 years ago by the god Tan. According to Loyd, the first 7 Books Of Tan were linked with many famous people and historical events. All very convincing and it made Sam a lot of money. Later examination showed it to be a colossal joke. The book did catalog over 600 patterns, many by Loyd himself.

At each of the first 5 stops, pick up a different puzzle piece and the next coordinates. Once you have all the tans, try to place all seven into a square without overlapping or leaving spaces. The final stop is a traditional cache in an ammunition container.

This cache is located at Keyser High School. The best place to park is in the student lot on the right hand side of the building. Enjoy your mathematical journey along the tangram trail!
