In the 1960's and 1970's Göteborg was one of
the leading shipbuilding sites in the world but today there are
only memories left. In the mid 1970's about 15000 people were
employed in the shipping industry. Counting all kinds of suppliers
up to 200 000 people was depending on the shipping industry,
including my late fathers company! The last ship that was built
left the Arendal shipyard 1988. It was the
icebreaker Oden. I was actually working on the last ship
equipped at the Eriksberg Shipyard (in the summer of 1981), even
after the shipyard was officially closed. There are some more
shipyards to be found, but the four giving the names to the caches
are the most important ones.
Enjoy the caches in the hot parts of Göteborg
there is a lot of action on the old shipyards sites. In the more
central ones there are mainly residential buildings, and at Arendal
there are industrial areas.
More information about the shipyards can be found
here: Varvshistoriska Föreningen i
Göteborg (unfortunately only in Swedish)
Eriksberg 1853 - 1979.
In the most glorious days Eriksberg was one of the
largest shipyards in the world! The super tankers T/T "Nai Genova"
of 400 000 tons DW, and the sister ship T/T "Nai Superba", are the
largest ships built in Göteborg. Delivered in 1978 they measured;
length 369 m, width 63 m and depth 29,5 meter.
The cache is placed in a park that sometimes is
known as the predecessor of the amusement park Liseberg. In the
early 1900's the workers from the shipyards used to go and have
their picnic on Sunday, the working free day of the week. The
working community and the early unions also used to have their
meetings and parties here. Take a walk and enjoy the beauty and
feel the history present.
