Geocache Description:

A multi-cache along the waterfront in downtown Long Beach.  This cache was inspired by a cache in Avalon on Catalina Island (GC1EMZ7) as well as other historical walk multi-caches.  This cache will be best found by bike or foot.  Depending on your pace, the total time to find the cache and return to your starting location should be about an hour or a little less if you are walking.  Please use stealth while finding and retrieving the cache.

Take your time and enjoy the views while traveling between waypoints. There are 7 waypoints. At the final, be careful, because things could get a bit prickly. Also, see the suggested parking waypoint which is at a pay lot. This would be a good cache for out of town cachers since there are several caches to pick up along the way. I welcome any feedback you have about the cache.

The FINAL coordinates for the cache are are at WP7:

N 33 45.ABC  W 118 11.DEF

WP1 = N 33 45.615 W 118 11.646;  WP1 will take you to the Long Beach Harbor Lighthouse.  There you will find a panel for the Cyclone Racer.  Look at the caption near the bottom of the picture.  In the second line are two numbers.  The third digit of the number on the left is “D”.

WP2 = N 33 45.625 W 118 11.776’;  WP2 is located at the Long Beach Navy Memorial.  While there take time to check out the sculpture and the Freedom Tree.  There is a signpost showing the intersection of two historic streets in the naval shipyard.  This was erected to honor the Sullivan Brothers, 5 brothers from Iowa who were killed in action after the sinking of the USS Juneau in November, 1942, during the naval battle of Guadalcanal.  The number of the numbered street name is “B”.

WP3 = N 33 45.750 W 118 11.776; WP3 is at the fountain outside the Aquarium of the Pacific.  The Aquarium opened in 1998.  There is a quote by Allen Kelly in the walkway.  Find the year of the quote. “C”  = fourth digit plus one. Extra credit if you read the entire quote.

WP4 = N 33 45.731 W 118 11.644; At WP4 is a plaque titled “What is the Transpac?”.  At the bottom the plaque are 4 photos.  Below the second photo from the left is a caption with the year the photo was taken.  The third digit of the year is “E”.

WP5 = N 33 45.697 W 118 11.589;  WP5 is at a rectangular plaque about the Transpac race.  The first digit of the number in the first line (excluding the title) is “F”.

WP6 = N33 45.701 W 118 11.426;  At WP6 is a 10 foot pole with two letters at the top: a large-sized letter and a small-sized letter.  Take the numeric value of each letter corresponding to its position in the alphabet (A=1, B=2, etc.).  Take the value of the small letter and subtract the value of the large letter.  The answer is “A”.
