Church Micro 2691...Holy Trinity Brompton Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

mbtkz: Alas this one has gone missing. As we don't travel to this part of London much anymore, we have decided to archive it. Thank you to everyone who has found it previously, and we hope you enjoyed the little garden oasis.

Geocache Description:

This is a short multi (@15 minutes total) taking you to a nice church, and churchyard/garden, in the heart of Knightsbridge, London. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD ONLY ATTEMPT THIS IN DAYLIGHT, AS THE GARDEN IS CLOSED FROM DUSK.

The above co-ordinates are NOT for the final cache, which is NOT on the church grounds. The cache is a round magnetic container. There is a log sheet only so please bring your own pen. The co-ordinates on the cache page take you to the junction of Brompton Road with the start of the driveway/path that leads down to the church.

This church was designed in the gothic style by Thomas Leverton Donaldson. It was built between 1826 and 1829, and is currently a Grade II listed building. Some time after its construction a portion of its land was sold to the Roman Catholic Church in order for them to build the Brompton London Oratory. This created a long driveway from Brompton road to the church, which may mean that these days the church is often overlooked by passers by. The church has been modified over the years, the most recent major modification being during the 1980s when the crypt was rebuilt to provide meeting rooms and a bookshop. The church is currently run by HTB - click here for more info.

To find the cache, start by standing on the pavement at the published co-ordinates, looking northwards towards the church. There is a brick wall on your left running all the way down the driveway/path. This has large black square lights attached to it. Count the lights as you walk down the driveway towards the church, up until you are roughly level with a bright yellow waist high post with a key pad on it (this will be before you reach the wooden 'sentry box'). The number of lights is AB.

Straight ahead (facing the church) you will see a door leading down to the basement church book shop. Count the number of steps leading down to the cafe/book shop. This is CD.

Now head westwards, walking around the side of the church to the garden at the back (don't worry about the barrier or the guard in the sentry box - the security is just for car parking: pedestrians can walk through with no problem - you may even wish to give the guard a cheery wave as you pass by). The churchyard/garden is highly valued by locals and office workers, as it is a pretty and peaceful place to visit away from all the concrete and traffic along Brompton Road. You may wish to eat your picnic lunch here, or exit through the north gate to explore the adjacent cobbled mews streets. Don't forget to look back and up at the church, to admire it's tall clock tower. Whilst in the garden, wander around and count how many STONE benches (not wooden ones) there are. This is E.

The final cache NOT on the church grounds, but is only a a short walk away at:

N51 29.(3xB)(C+E)(B-D)
W000 10.(2xE)(2xB)(A-C)

The check sum for the numbers in the final co-ordinates (using all the numbers in the Northings and Westings, both already given plus those that need to be calculated) should add up to 40.

We believe this cache is wheelchair and buggy friendly, as there are tarmac/stone paths for the whole of the route, including ramps to reach different levels. Wheelchair users may or may not need slight assistance in reaching for the actual cache container. We hope you enjoy this little exploration of the church and its grounds.

FTF congratulations go to Loony Londo.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
