Falls Branch / Horseshoe Mountain Cache
In Arkansas, United States
How Geocaching Works
Location is about 50' off the Horseshoe Mountain Trail at Lake Catherine State Park. Cache is a green ammo box.
Update 8/25/04! Cache is now located just off the Horseshoe Mountain Trail. You can still use the Falls Branch Trail to get to the cache, as the cache is still located near the intersection of the two trails. The shortest route to the cache is 1/2 mile hike, but it is not the easiest route. The easiest route is to take the Falls Branch Trail to the intersection with the wooden bench, then get on the Horseshoe Mountain Trail just a short distance to the cache. After finding the cache, I recommend taking the Horseshoe Mountain Trail back to the parking area, as there is a wonderful vista just down the trail from the cache. Then it's all down hill from there. Stop by the visitor's center for a trail map, and don't miss the waterfall while you are here.
The Civilian Conservation Corps developed this park in the 1930s as one of the six original state parks in Arkansas. Did you know Remmel Dam, a hydroelectric dam built in 1924 on the Ouachita River, forms Lake Catherine and was the first dam built in Arkansas? The park's namesake was the first of the three popular Diamond Lakes created around Hot Springs.
This is an absolutely gorgeous park! Don't miss the fall foliage! Cache is about 1/2 mile hike from trailhead if you take the Falls Branch Trail. However, you may also choose to take the Horseshoe Mountain Trail. This is slightly longer hike & a little more rugged. Both trails are loop trails, and they intersect near the cache location. Stop by the visitor center for trail maps.
This park has it all! Swimming, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, playground, shopping. You name it, they've got it. This is a wonderful place to come spend the day, or the whole weekend.
NOTE: This cache has a Arkansas State Parks Permit # 15
