Geocache Description:

The hike to this cache starts on an old woods road then shifts closer to the cliff top and follows herd paths then bushwhacks. A bit of the terrain is rough...rock, winding around blowdowns, steep at times. But the view and the isolation are sublime.

This cache is not for the faint of heart. You will be bushwhacking! You will see lots of moose poop and may even scare one up. But, you will end up at a very nice secluded spot with a fine view south and east. You will not really be in the middle of nowhere though, there are Maine and NH State Line markers in abundance and a pile of rocks over a benchmark. All within view from the cache location. The cache is a small plastic container with some small items for those daring and hearty enough to make it there.

Where to start: I come from the south on Kennard Hill Road in Porter, turning west onto Foss Mt Rd. There are several places to park, and if your vehicle has plenty of clearance, you can drive almost all the way in to the "trailhead". Others have logged driving in from the west on Willis Bean Rd. I have not tried that so cannot recommend it. Two new caches were placed on April 25, 2012 to lead one up a new route to this cache. They are "Follow the Cliff" and "Moose Knoll". There is a lovely hemlock forest between "Moose Knoll" and "Barely in Maine", and if you look at the topo map, you will notice that it is easier to travel just a bit north, away from the cliff, then swing back to reach "Barely..."

People ask me how I find these places. Well, I spot a rocky top from a different viewpoint, then figure out where it is on a USGS map. Then using the map and, in this case talking to a local, I found the place to start and just went exploring for a view. The GPS helped too, because my basic one has the Maine/New Hampshire state line indicated, and that was one of my goals.
