Geocache Description:

GeoWoodstock III will be held at Hanna Park in Jacksonville, Florida, the NEW land of plenty, at shelters #4 & 5. Rain or Shine.

The posted date is correct!

May 28, 2005

Thanks Groundspeak for allowing us to get the word out
early for those traveling great distances!

This is a very laid back event to meet and greet fellow enthusiasts (that's a nice way to say lunatics - isn't it?) and discuss geocaching ideas from around the country. There will be some manner of geocaching game Saturday afternoon with cool door prizes provided by Garmin, Magellan, Groundspeak and anyone else who cares to donate something.

Hanna Park is a beautiful, ocean side park with all the amenities including great camping! There are hiking trails, biking trails, beaches, a waterpark, lakes, ponds, etc., etc., blah, blah, blah. Jacksonville, Florida has the best park system in the country and Hanna Park is the jewel in the crown. There is a small fee to enter the park ($1) and they charge the same $1 to re-enter if you leave. There shouldn't be any reason to leave the park until the event is over. We're hoping to get a group rate but no promises. Personally, I say pay the fee, it's worth it!

The event will start at 10:00 AM. (more or less - remember this is a laid back event!) Your first stop will be at the event registration desk (registration will begin at 9:00 am) at the cache coordinates in the park where attendees will be provided with a name badge. Immediately following your sign-in, you will be provided with a Geo-Bingo form for an ice breaker game to help us get to know each other a little better. There will be a prize for the winner and runners up so don't be a spoil sport! PLAY THE STUPID GAME!

Around 11:30am we should be ready to eat a fine meal of genuine Northeast Florida raised yard bird. To you Yankees - that means chicken. It will be expertly barbequed on site by none other than our locally famous Perky182 with his entourage of well skilled chicken burners... oops! I mean chefs. Here will be a lesson for you out-of-towners on the proper method of making barbeque. It's not drowned in sauce (that's your job), it's not pulled from the bone (again, your job), and it is DEFINITELY not like that vinegar soaked "meat type" product they sell in Raleigh! It's just good ol' REAL barbeque. Any complaints will be accepted in the dish washing area by the guy with the big stick. You are welcome to bring something to share but it is not required.

Once everyone has a belly full of food and have paid homage to the chefs, we will electronically load your GPS units with coordinates and send you on your merry way to find the event caches. All event caches will be inside the park! You may want to drive to some of them but it will not be necessary. Mountain bikes are welcome and may provide some advantage. (Note I said "may"!)

Around 3 or 4pm we will have a nice bit of dessert back at the pavillion. Naturally this will include the required pie eating contest for JoGPS and Wimseyguy. Others may join in but please let us know in advance so we have enough pies! Special pie requests will be honored if accompanied by an appropriate "request". Just let us know what kind of pie you want in Paypal's message field.

After dessert we will have a bit of entertainment (besides that provided by the pie eating contest). Please note: the word "entertainment" is used here very loosely. We make no promises or guarantees that anyone (besides us) will be entertained! After all the goofin' off is done we will get down to business and give out the LOOT! That's what we all got into geocaching for - right? You have to be present to win so hang out a while.

After all the pies are eaten and the loot is passed out, we'll bid a sad adieu and maybe even sing a song. On second thought, maybe not. One last note about the singing.... anyone who starts "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" will be immediately bludgeoned with the nearest blunt instrument.

This cache page is a work in progress so check back often!

It looks like there may be a barbecue showdown at the event! Clearpath has thrown down the gauntlet! My taste buds can't stand the suspense.

UPDATE 03/18/2005: There are now Geowoodstock 3 Commemorative Coins Available. For more information, go to this link.
UPDATE to the UPDATE: Coins are SOLD OUT!

UPDATE 04/12/2005:

Since it appears that that both of our recommended campsites have filled up we are posting an additional 10 to 15 campsites on our Hotels and Camping Page We have not checked out these sites or are we in anyway connected with these sites. They were simply found and listed by using Google searches of the surrounding area. If you are still having problems with accommodations please post to the GW3 cache page where others may see your need and possibly offer accommodations with their current reservations.

UPDATE 04/13/2005: Funding for this completely free event is being made possible through the sale of event t-shirts. We are selling a heavy weight (6.1 oz.) shirt in either athletic grey or white (for tie dyeing!). They will have the GeoWoodstock 3 logo on the front printed in red and black and the Groundspeak logo on the rear. They are available through the through the t-shirt order page. For easiest ordering, send a Paypal payment in the amount of $15 per shirt ordered to piratela40 AT comcast DOT net making sure to put your geocaching name and t-shirt size, color, and quantity in the comment field. All profit from the sale of t-shirts will go directly to the event. The more money we make from t-shirts - the more we will spend on the event. For example - we are providing name tags for attendees and have looked at having them attached to lanyards.

PLEASE place your orders now so we can make sure we order enough for everyone. We will order a small amount of extra t-shirts but the price will go up after we hit the drop dead date for ordering the shirts. Thanks!

UPDATE 04/17/2005: The powers that be have spoken! The cut off date for pre-ordering t-shirts at $15 has passed. (My suggestion if you REALLY want a groovy t-shirt is to order a white one and tie-dye it - that's what I'll be doing!) We will order a very small amount of extra t-shirts in a limited size range so it is possible you could get a shirt after this date but don't count on it! Orders taken after 4/21 will be on a first come - first served basis and will be a few dollars more to pay for the extra grief you are causing us by scaring us into thinking we might have to pay for all the food and expenses out of our own pockets!

UPDATE 04/20/2005: The cut off date for pre-ordering t-shirts at $15 has passed. In going over the t-shirt orders we have found that most have not stated a color preference between white and gray. The default color is gray. Please send us an email immediately if you wanted white unless you've already expressed your preference. We want everyone to be happy!

Update May 14,2005

Attention The Date for Registration has now passed for details continue below:

The Registration for GeowoodstockIII has now ended. What does that mean to you who waited to register to late. The purpose for registration was to allow us to do 2 things get your freebies together and to get an accurate count for food. If you failed to register we May not have enough food for you when you attend. Everyone who wants to come is still more than welcome to attend but the we can not guarantee that we will be able to feed you. The other issue is the fact that we won't have the free registration goodies for you. But no matter there will still be plenty of room you post a note to the cache page you are coming and we look forward to seeing you here.

We would also like to encourage everyone who has ordered shirts but that has not yet paid from them to get your payments in as soon as possible. The profit generated from the sale of T-Shirts is what is putting on this great event. We will be sending out friendly reminders to those we have not received payment from so we can put on the best event possible.

Last but certainly not least there was a small issue with the Friday Night Meet and Greet event. We had to archive the Event Web Page but the event WILL STILL BE TAKING PLACE. The link is still active and we encourage everyone top post their intention to come.

A vote was taken and the competition was close but the members of NEFGA have chosen 10 of the most challenging caches that North Florida has to offer. The challenge will run from May 22nd through June 5th. If any cacher can complete those 10 caches they can also log the Florida Scavenger Hunt.

UPDATE 05/19/2005: Posted coordinates are correct!

UPDATE 05/20/2005: We still have a small quantity of t-shirts available for sale. Since we have done so well at squeezing every last bit of value out of each buckazoid, we have kept the price at $15. If you buy and pay BEFORE the event, the cash generated will go directly into buying more good stuff like pies and door prizes and more pies and more door prizes and even more pies and maybe even boiled shrimp for an appetizer.

We want the focus of this event to be about socializing, fun and fellowship. As much as we have made out about this event being all about the numbers we don't want anyone to feel that that have to cache. We are trying to promote an atmosphere where everyone can come and go as they please and feel like they can participate at whatever level they so desire
