Mary, Queen of Scots, wanted to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I, and began exchanging messages with her co-conspirators, Anthony Babington, in particular. This was dubbed the Babington Plot. These messages were enciphered, although they were cracked by Elizabeth's codebreaker. Mary was arrested, put on trial, and these messages were used to convict her. Her life ended with a beheading.
