Saturday, May 2, 2015 will mark the 15th anniversary of the "Big Blue Switch" of GPS selective availability being flipped off, enabling civilians to enjoy accurate GPS signals. On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the switch controlling selective availability was turned off. Prior to this event, the GPS signals were only accurate for U.S. Military purposes. On command, twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.
The "flipping of the Big Blue switch" improved navigation aids for land, sea, air and hearalded the beginning of our hobby.
I can't think of a better way to celebrate that anniversary than hanging out with geocachers at an event. We will meet to celebrate the momentus event in GPS history, enabling our beloved hobby, geocaching.
AS A BONUS: The blacksmithing feature on the opposite side of State Route 299 is scheduled to be open between the hours of 9:30 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. ***(weather permitting)***
