Geocache Description:

“Michigan Spirit Quest”

The Michigan Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by SixDogTeam. In just over two and a half years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over five hundred and fifty caches and the hiders have grown to twenty-five cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

"Robin Hood of the 1800's"

WELCOME TO Mundy Cemetery in Kinderhook, Branch county, Michigan. Mundy Cemetery is the final resting place of Silas Doty the most noted thief and burglar of his time. He was a leader of a gang of counterfeiters, horse thieves and burglars of the New England, Middle and Western states. Considering his lifetime of crime, he spent little time in jail. Born in Vermont in 1800, he lived in Hillsdale and Lenawee Counties in Michigan, where he brought up his family. Silas was an expert mechanic and tool maker. For example, he would make handcuffs, sell them to a sheriff, and keep a duplicate key for himself. He was a noted horse thief. By day he was a farmer, by night a famous rider. He would wait until after midnight, open a locked stable, pick the best and fastest horse, lead it out, relock the gate and ride away. It is said that he often stole from the rich and gave to the poor. During the Mexican War, Doty led a gang of thieves who changed into civilian clothes at night and plundered the countryside. It is said that they also freely exchanged American and Mexican Military Uniforms. There is a rather handsome Doty Monument. Next to it is an old marble marker with the name Sophia Doty, wife of Silas Doty. On the other side is a small marble tomstone about the size of a book. It simply says S.D., 1890. It seems logical that this is Silas Doty.
