Puyallup's Things That Go Bump in the Night Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

GrnXnham: We went to check on this one today and found that someone had removed a majority of our glint tacks. The cache was also missing and there were more signs of social trails around the cache site. No one has even attempted to find this cache in nearly a year. Due to the muggling of our cache as well as the lack of interest in looking for this cache over the past year, we have decided to archive this cache. Thank you to all who found and enjoyed this cache!

Geocache Description:

This is a night cache.

We HIGHLY recommend looking for this cache after dark. During the day, you may find this cache a little TOO challenging! You will be following a trail of orange or white fire tacks to find this cache. You will need to bring a good quality flashlight that has good throw for a distance of at least 50 feet. Most small keychain-type lights and flood-type LED head lamps will simply not have enough power to see the fire tacks from any distance. Choose your flashlight wisely. For best results, hold your flashlight up next to your head when scanning the trail ahead for fire tacks. When holding the light in this way, the light from the reflective fire tacks will shine right back in your eyes, illuminating the way. Holding the light at your waist will not work as well.

The coordinates listed for this cache is the starting point for the trail of fire tacks. Here you will see two fire tacks within a few inches of each other on a tree East of the trail. Look South down the trail until you see the next fire tack on a tree. Then go to that tree and scan for the next fire tack and so on and so forth! Finally, you will reach a double-tree with 6 tacks on it total close together. However, only 2 or 3 of the tacks may be visible at one time depending on your viewing angle. This 6-tacked tree is over 50 feet off the main trail on a little-used social trail. The cache is approximately 25 feet West of here. Expect a total round trip of around 1 mile. The terrain is mostly a well maintained trail but there are a couple of steep spots that can get slick when wet. So use caution at night.

The best parking is at the coordinates below. I'd HIGHLY recommend parking here in the North parking lot where there is no gate. The South parking lot has a gate at the entrance that gets locked at night. BEWARE--YOU MIGHT GET LOCKED IN UNLESS YOU PARK IN THE LOT LISTED BELOW! Also, remember there were few smart phones when this cache was placed. Most of the tacks are only on one side of the trees. Early finders followed their tracks on their GPSr to find their way out. A real GPSr is always helpful but if you only have a phone, don't forget the way out of the woods!

UPDATE 10/11/10: Due to several people being told by police that the park was closed, I called Puyallup Parks and Recreation to ask about the hours in the park. As it turns out, the North Parking Lot IS open until 11PM. The South parking lot (with the gate that locks) closes 1/2 hour after dusk. Please hunt for this cache prior to 11PM.
