Geocache Description:

Our travels today will take us to the small country village of Fingest which can be found sheltered by the beech wooded chilterns at the head of the Hambleden Valley.

Our story & of course reason for being here takes us back to the year 1320. A young man by the name of Henry Burghersh has become the Bishop of Lincoln at the age of 28 after failing to realise his ambition of becoming Bishop of Winchester. Fingest was administered by the Bishops of Lincoln, who had a palace there just north of the Church at the site of the present day manor house. Along with this duty Burghersh was granted 'Free Warren' or sporting rights to his entire manor, as well as ownership of Hanger & Mill Hanging Wood.

For most people these rights would be greatfully accepted, but for the selfish Bishop they proved not nearly enough. He was soon granted a license to 'impark 300 acres of land enjoining' the land he already owned, land which had been used by the local commoners for years to make a living from. They were left with 100 acres to fulfill all their needs which was simply not enough and this lead to poverty and distress as well as an ongoing hatred towards the greedy Burghersh. The villagers cursed the soul of Henry who had caused them so much hardship.

In 1340 Henry died, but it was not long, as folklore tells it, before retribution followed, when an apparition of a green man with bow and quiver appeared before one of Henrys few friends in the churchyard begging for the land to be returned to the common people and sobbing his fate, that he was condemned for eternity to roam the woods and land he had stolen, as a forester. This however came too late it seems as his ghost continued to haunt the area for many years afterwards...

The coordinates will take you to the same churchyard where Burghersh's spirit was said to have appeared... On visiting it quickly became clear that this part of Fingest's history has been shunned and forgotten about. Inside the church there seem to be no records of Burghersh or a Green Man, & although we searched the churchyard we found no trace of a tomb. I have not been able to unearth any information reguarding his death or place of burial, but now suspect that something more sinister than natural causes ended this man's life...

Answer the following questions to locate your prize, you might need some inside information or a sign from god to help you on your way (and yes, the co-ords have been updated, especially for those cachers who were looking for an easy ride instead of a challenge!) You should now be taken to within a fair distance of the stash!):

1) In 1A17, the first recorded rector came to Fingest.

2) In October 155B, a stake was erected in the town ditch.

3) On the 20th July in 158C the Spanish Fleet bore down apon England.

Use your answers to complete the following final set of coords:

N51° 37.(A-2)B(B-1) W000° 52.B(C-1)(A+6)

You will be taken to something's start & a seat by a sign? with a fantastic view where tree cover can be avoided, but only just! Perhaps you'll meet a friendly face along the way... If you visit during daylight hours on certain days it is possible to take a look around the church and sign the visitors book. After completing the cache the village pub serves a fine pint of Leaf Fall and good food for the hungry or thirsty adventurer. Finally, remember to bring a torch or two if visiting in the dark. The witching hour could be a little unnerving otherwise, have a devilishly good time, D&P...
