Geocache Description:

Are you thinkin' what we're thinkin'? 'Cuz we're thinkin' it's time for another Snow Snake Championship! Gather your snakes and come on down to Hamilton for the time of your life!

What is Snow Snake?
  • We play our game of snow snake by dividing up into 2 equal teams, called corners and compete in trying to throw wooden "snow snakes" the farthest down trough of snow about 200' long. The game is divided into rounds where each team member gets one throw. At the end of each round, two points, are awarded to the team of the person who made the farthest throw and one point is awarded for the second farthest throw. Play continues until one of the teams wins, by achieving 7 points.

  • All the attendees' snow snakes are gathered together and each team/thrower is allowed to pick from the grouping for their throw. This evens out the teams as we're not all professional snow snake makers. However, no snake may be thrown more than once per round. The strategy of this is deciding which team member is best at throwing which snakes as each has a different "flight" style to it.

  • Alternatively, in the past we have chosen to limit later rounds/games to certain handicaps. This includes but is not limited to a certain type of snake, a certain type of throw, etc.

When is the Event?
Sat. Feb. 20, 2016 @ 1pm
  • Please arrive early to get placed on a team. Round 1 will start as soon as all are ready and the rules have been explained. We're expecting this event to last a half hour. You may come at any time if you aren't competing and visit while spectating. Bring your own chairs or make one out of snow if needed.

  • We will definitely need help with the building of the trough beforehand. Stay tuned for further information on when that will be.

What to Expect?
  • Last years have been the test; now we're full swing! If you are participating, you will need to bring your own crafted snow snake and you will be grouped into one of the two "Corners": North or West. Upon starting, play will continue fast and furious until a victor is crowned. Multiple games may be played if there is time/interest. All of this is subject to the number of attendees.

Snow Snakes
  • The poles used in the game, collectively known as "snow snakes", have different names depending on their length. The smallest poles used are the six-inch-long "snow darts". The next size up is the three-foot-long "short snake", also known as a "mud cat". Longer poles are known only as "snow snakes", and can be anywhere from six to ten feet in length.

  • We ask that each person participating bring their own snake(s) but it is not the end of the world if you cannot. You'll still be able to compete.

  • Your snake must be made to fit one of the three classifications: Snow Dart, Mud Cat, or Snow Snake (see above for clarification). It must be made out of wood or bone. Feel free to bring snakes made from other materials for fun/experimentation but they will not be allowed in competition. Please have fun and customize your snow snakes by decorating them with colorful designs or adding minor modifications, such as waxing or adding a weighted front end. If you've attended past events, you'll know what works and what doesn't.

No Snow Alternative
  • It's Michigan so we're not too worried, but in the event of not having snow to play in this will turn into a javelin competition with the same rules.

  • And as always, bring your own beverages of any type
