Geocache Description:

Well, maybe slow it down a little in these historic woods.

In 1673 when Marquette and Jolliet first transferred their canoes from the Des Plaines river to Portage creek on their way to Lake Michigan, the garlic mustard plant was still safely corralled in it’s native Europe.

Sometime in the mid 1800’s a garlic mustard plant, referred to as “gm” from now on, or seed made it’s way across the Atlantic and the rest, as they say, is history. As of the year 2000, gm has spread to 34 states and 4 Canadian provinces; crowding out native wildflowers along the way.

Though there are a few different ways to combat gm, we here at the Portage pull it. Hard, but rewarding, work.

Along with pulling gm, there is a little CITO, but mostly pulling gm and perhaps planting some prairie grass seeds.

Gloves, bags, and other essentials will be provided but it might be smart to bring what you think you might need to survive whatever time you spend pulling. I don’t have to tell cachers what’s needed in the woods! : )

Come and stay as long or short as you want. I’ve got a feeling some new caches will pop up in the surrounding woods just before the big pull.
