CACHE IS NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES!
This cache is intended to honor those CA Cachers that are truly committed to this ideal. All one has to do to claim this Mystery Cache is to log a cache in every California County and post your finds as shown below. Sounds simple enough?! California is the greatest state in the union, so go see it!

Log all 58 county finds, then email Team Geo-Rangers your list, and we will email you the exact coordinates of the final cache to find. The California DeLorme Challenge (GCHANH) helps with the Northern California Counties!

There is a cache and logbook hidden in Riverside County but not at the posted coordinates. The exact coordinates will be emailed to the geocacher whose 58 county caches have been verified. Credit for this cache may only occur upon finding the final CA Mystery Cache!

Other Rules:

  1. You do not need to do the exact same caches as Team Geo-Rangers with the exception of the last Mystery physical cache "Logging California's 58 Counties" in Riverside County. You can not claim credit for just this one physical cache in Riverside County without finding caches in all 58 counties.
  2. One can not claim one's own cache for any county.
  3. Found Cache types may be traditional cache(C), Multi-cache (M), Mystery (Mys), LetterBox (LB), Earth (E), Virtual (V), and Locationless/Reverse (L/R) with extra credit and bragging rights for at least one of each!
  4. Post in County alphabetical order per the cache description.
  5. Incomplete postings logged as finds will be deleted! Each cacher is allowed to post a note with those found and add to the SAME NOTE over time until logging 58, thus converting the note into a find after finding the final mystery cache. This is highly encouraged! Chit chat type posts will remain for a brief time but may be deleted to keep the focus on the CA race to 58 (+1)!

Excel helps compile finds for posting; please share your favorite cache in each CA county!

With your note, one may wish to include the CA map generated by ITSNOTABOUTTHENUMBERS.

Good Luck - YOU MAY NEED IT!

January 15 by ChipnDonna (1405 found)
It seems many of those who have completed the "Discovering & Logging California's 58 Counties" challenge have added a bit of personal history of how they got started on this challenge. I will do the same since this is a very special challenge and accomplishment for those of us who have pursued it.

For me it began in June of 2009. Since Aug. 2004, I had geocached in 14 countries, 15 states and 17 counties of CA, and I was looking for a little summer adventure. Prior to June 2009 my use of computer technology had been limited to Bookmarking a group of caches I would go after on a given day, double column formatting the cache information including the 5 latest logs using Mac OS app Pages, printing it out to carry, and then generating a loc file of coordinates to download to my Garmin 60Cx.

When I decided on my quest to "Cache the CA Counties" I knew I needed a paperless approach. I began using Pocket Queries and generating a "Find Caches Along a Route" GPX query. I had no smart phone, but I had a 4-year old 3rd Gen clickwheel iPod for storage of cache information and I found the MacCaching application that allowed me to transfer GPX files to the iPod as notes. I was now paperless and good to go!

During July I made a one-day 450 mile sweep of counties close to home from San Francisco to just above Sacramento. Then a week later I drove 760 mi. and cached the central valley counties down as far as the northern tip of Ventura County before returning home. It was during this trip that I read a log by CKayaks that made me aware of this mystery cache challenge Discovering & Logging California's 58 Counties and I decided that I would also pursue it.

In early Aug. my wife and I visited the north coast redwoods, Crater Lake, and Calaveras Sequoias and cached all the remaining northern CA counties. I wrote to Team Geo-Rangers to say we had completed all but 5 southern CA counties and we would be down in Jan 2010. But, as I put my excel county list together to post a note of my progress to this GCQ2VC cache site, I realized that I had missed Amador county! I couldn't believe it since we had been within 10 mi of the county line on our 1500 mi. Aug. trip. ARRGH!

We celebrated my wife's birthday with a cache find in Amador County, a nice dinner at the Amador City hotel, and another 300 mi. trip. By now I had bought a 3rd gen iPod Touch and I was using the Groundspeak Geocaching App which is fantastic as long as I continue to use my Garmin GPSr to actually find the caches.

We set out on Jan. 9 to combine caching with a visit to Death Valley, Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas, a visit with friends in Vegas, and my wife's attendance at the "Road to California" Quilt Show in Ontario. That put me in striking range of the 5 remaining CA County caches which I finished on Thursday Jan. 14.

The morning of Jan. 15 I was happy to find the e-mail from Team Geo-Rangers giving me the coordinates of the mystery cache and we drove south from Ontario to make the grab. I had read all the previous logs so I was prepared. I approached from the north walking from a small park. I used my pair of walking sticks to maneuver across rocks, water, and reeds. Surprisingly I saw no nettles - It might be the time of year and the route I took. The cache was about 25 feet west of my gz so it took a little while before I expanding my search, found the cache and logged my find. Saturday we completed our 1400 mi January journey and returned home.

Like many challenges go, the accomplishment gives a sense of satisfaction, but also a sense of disappointment because the challenge is over and now I will have to find a new one. Was the quest worth the total travel of 4400 mi and 2 1/2 weeks? In the immortal words of Sarah Palin, "You bet'cha!"

Thank you, Team Geo-Ranger, for inspiring me and all the others who preceded me and those who will surely follow in our footsteps and tire tracks.

Road Trip Day 7 at 10:11 a.m.
We found a cache in our 58th California County (Orange) on December 6, 2007 and posted a note with our qualifying list of finds on the 7th. For us, the hardest part of this cache was getting back down to this area to seek the final. We had driven nearby coming from Anza Borrego and going to a Mr & Mrs Wisearse (now the Cache Liberation Front) monthly event in Riverside the day before we made our final county find and now, 729 days later, we finally got back down here.

Thanks for the cache.

We first found out about this cache 2 years ago,we said it would be fun to try this someday.

We found caches in the last county in March '08. After returned home before we could get the coordinates to this cache.

jkruegel who we cache with often and is a good friend got all the counties after we did and said he would not go for this cache till we did.....We went for this caches together.

It took a little time to work out how to get to the cache, read past logs, checked satellite photos, drove around the area of the caches.

We tried one way and turned back and came at it a different way.

Thank you for placing this cache and thank you jkruegel for for waiting for us to find this cache.(he passed by this cache 2 times waiting for a time that we could get it at the same time)

This was our 5000th Cache

Well after about a 1 1/2 years of chasing this one, it is finally over. I feel a deep sense of pride and accompleshment when we found the final cache. I am also sad to see it done, but I have moved on and am trying to complete several of the Delorme Challeges. I am thankful to you for doing this challenge and to Patnanz for starting me in this fun adventure. They also kept me going when time and money was tight. I was very happy to pick up this cache with them and it felt only right that I waited for them. Thanks again for the adventure and hope to run into you and anyone else who continues to challlenge the Geocaching community.
