Pomona is the goddess of orchards, and is especially identified with apple trees. She was a Hamadryad - a wood nymph - who was tricked into marriage by Vertumnus, who visited her in the guise of an old woman. The "old woman' praised Vertumnus, and told Pomona the tragic story of a stone-hearted woman. When Vertumnus suddenly stood revealed as a handsome young man, Pomona accepted his proposal. They lived happily ever after.
Pomona carries a pruning knife, and cares for orchards, making sure that the trees are properly planted and pruned, and watered during times of drought.
A number of town and villages throughout the world are named for her, perhaps in the hope that she will watch over the orchards and protect the young trees.
