Geocache Description:

There is no cache here now.

This cache is now disabled for the following reasons:
1. The land is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is managed by Natural England and they are rightly concerned about too many people in this area, especially during May - July when the Little Terns breed here.

2. There is evidence that the Piri Piri burr which is a non-native species that is affecting the dunes is spreading from here to other locations.

Please be very careful if visiting Ross Sands and check your clothing for any piri piri burr when you leave.

**********************************************************************

A walk of almost 7 miles round trip from Ross, the most likely parking place at N 55 37.573 W 001 47.600. It is between 1-1.5 miles from here to the beach then head north towards Holy Island.

The cache is hidden near the Lindisfarne Oyster company atop the dunes opposite Holy Island. There are two distinctive shipping beacons, loosely termed 'lighthouses' by Trinity House, that were designed in the early to mid 1800's by John Dobson, a famous Newcastle upon Tyne architect.

There is historical evidence that the oyster beds were founded in 1381 by the Lindisfarne Monks. Check out www.lindisfarneoysters.co.uk.

Fabulous view of Holy Island, it feels like you could almost touch it or walk to it (but don't even think about it!).
