Os Baleeiros do Faial da Terra
“Tendo como objetivo resgatar o património Baleeiro do Faial da Terra, os Presidentes da Câmara Municipal da Povoação e da Junta de Freguesia do Faial juntaram à mesa alguns filhos da terra, como João Luís Câmara, mais conhecido por todos como João Luís Mariano, antigo baleeiro, e Fernando Raposo, filho de um dos principais merceeiros da localidade, na década de 50 e seguintes.
Embora, aparentemente, não tivessem nada em comum, as vidas dos dois homens, um, filho de um baleeiro (José Mariano) e outro, filho de um merceeiro (António Raposo), acabaram por ser cruzar muitas vezes, pois já como contou Fernando Raposo quando os botes iam para o mar balear a mercearia do pai enchia-se de mulheres e crianças, esposas e filhos de baleeiros, que religiosamente ouviam os relatos dos vigias a fazerem o ponto de situação dos botes no mar.
“Era muito entusiasmante ver os nossos vizinhos, amigos e conhecidos atentos ao relato como se de um jogo de futebol se tratasse. Uns torciam pelo bote X e outros pelo Y. Enfim era uma alegria vivida com muita efusão”.
Foi também neste almoço que se ficou a saber que o porto que ainda hoje persiste na beira-mar do Faial foi construído com o suor dos baleeiros, no início da década de 50.
Por sua vez, foi também tornado conhecido por João Luis “Mariano” que o bote “Santa Joana” em exposição no Comercial do Parque Atlântico é o mesmo que foi lançado ao mar, pela primeira vez, em 1952 para balear no Faial da Terra.
Outros dados importantes sobre o quotidiano dos baleeiros eram que tinham apenas um dia de folga no ano, neste caso o “sábado do Senhor Santo Cristo” e eram tidos como homens de grande coragem, inclusivamente alguns ficaram para a história popular como heróis”.
