Two (If) By Sea Kayak

When we visit Refugio State Beach, we love paddling around and visiting with the Dolphins, Sea Otters, and Grey Whales.  Mom paddles her kayak while Osita sleeps in her lap, and Dad paddles his kayak while Sacapahtatoes looks for critters and Sea Apples (actually, Bull kelp bulbs - they taste and look a lot like salty apples to her, though).  During this trip, we just happened to have an empty ammo can in our hatch when we spotted a nice beach to land on, so we stuffed it full of goodies and placed it on shore for you to find.  It's out in the open, under a bush, up the slope just a ways up a geo-path.

While you could probably get to this cache by land, you'll cross private property, active rail road tracks, barbed wire and cliffs doing so.  Besides, it wouldn't be nearly as fun.  That's why we're giving this a terrain 5;  it's much easier via the easy 1 mile (each way) kayak route, and hopefully it's a great excuse to get on the water for a few of you adventure minded cachers.

This was our path to the cache.  The little zigzags on the far right are where we were playing with dolphins!  Google Earth doesn't match up too well with reality in this area; the cache isn't in the white rocks.  All tracks and WPTs are displayed too far north (left), and too far east (up).

The cache is just to the left and below the white rocks in the center of the picture.  Look for the only obvious trail near GZ and climb the slope.  The cache is chest high, on the ground, under a bush.  Check your Tide Tables as the landing may be a bit dicey during high tides; anything below 3' should be fine.

Original contents:

  1. Water bottle

  2. Signal whistle

  3. Light stick

  4. 4 AA batteries

  5. Kayak emergency signaling device

  6. Small first aid kit

  7. TB

We hope you enjoy your trip up the coast as much as we did!

Sincerely,

Team Trailgoon

It was such a fabulous day to be out here! The tide this afternoon was extra low - and I get too seasick to kayak! - so... we hoofed it. This is the last cache I needed to finish the Well-Rounded Cacher Challenge! Thanks!!
I'll be blogging about it: (visit link)
