A high-tech/low-tech adventure in and around the Spokane Mine area.
To find the cache you will need to use your letterboxing skills as well as your GPS skills. If you carefully follow the clues you shouldn't have too much trouble locating it.
1. Park at the gate at N43°50.578' W103°23.050'.
2. Follow the road east to a fork near an all concrete structure. Take a right turn.
3. Follow road until you reach a barb wire fence. Either climb the fence or follow it around to the opposite side. This the site of the former Spokane Mine.
4. Once on the other side of the fenced in area you will find a old house. There is no need to go inside. Count the number of white insulators (XX) around the back door. This seems odd to me to have them there at all. Must be a mining thing.
5. Use XX to come up a GPS coordinate. Use your GPS to find the next step.
YYY = XX + 357
ZZZ = XX + 552
N43°50.YYY' W103°22.ZZZ'
6. Once you are at the coordinates, look to Southeast. You will see 2 smaller rock outcrops similar to where you are. The cache is located in between them. At this point you should strategize how you want to get there. When I hid it I had to walk through it a couple times to find it again.
7. Once in between these two smaller outcrops, you will need to follow the west edge of a smaller outcrop not visible from the first outcrop. Confused yet? If you get stumped you can start over at the first one. There are 4 outcrops: 1 you had coords for, 2 you saw from there, and 1 in between them not visible from the first.
Don't forget to bring your personal letterboxing stamp, stamp pad, and log book if you have them! The box does not have an ink pad in it. If you're not familiar with letterboxing, you need to know that the stamp is not a trade item and stays with the cache.
Please do not post any coordinates in your log entry, even if it is encrypted.
The mine area has a few dangers you should be aware of: shallow holes, small amount of free climbing, barb wire, and maybe rattlesnakes. I only mention rattlesnakes because I have came across them in the Blacks Hills and my spider senses tell me this place could have some. I saw a lot of nice small black holes for them to live in. I hate to send anyone in an area without warning them. Hopefully that doesn't scare anyone off. Also I would not recommend this one for night caching. The holes aren't deep, but if you don't expect it, a fall into one could get you scraped up pretty bad.
