Finding the cache
The co-ordinates listed above are for the first stage of the cache.
Suggested parking is at Waitrose (see the additional waypoints) and is free at the moment, with a maximum stay of 2 hours. This should be plenty of time to gather the clues you need - you can easily complete the cache in less than an hour with a fast walk. The order of the virtual caches takes you on a nice circular walk around the town. You then have all the details you need to find the final cache. The final cache is a short drive from the town centre.
There are 8 virtual caches to find which then lead you to a regular sized cache box at the end which contains a number of goodies, plus a logbook and pencil.
The town of Newport
Newport is a delightful place to visit, shop or simply muse around. Did you know that Newport is a new town or rather was in the 12th century, planned by the Normans, with narrow burgage plots? Throughout the ages Newport has been known as Nova Burga or Newborough. Few of the mediaval buildings survived the great fire of 1665, when over 100 residents also perished.
So, why a "port"? Newport had a thriving inland fishing industry providing fish to the Royal Court if it was in the vicinity. The church on the High Street was founded by Henry I and dedicated to St Nicholas, the patron saint of fishermen.
If you are caching on a Friday or Saturday, these are market days. Many traditions still abound such as the Newport and District Agricultural Soeciety's annual show on the 3rd Saturday in July, so if you have a prize cow or pig, bear this date in mind.
