Geocache Description:

A trip around Beaulieu Heath in the New Forest. Placed in accordance with the GAGB guidelines and agreement with the Forestry Commission so please check out the New Forest Guidelines and stick to the rules so that we can continue to cache within the borders of the National Park.

Please make sure you stick to the paths no need to go cross country. The first flying at Beaulieu began with a RFC training grass field in 1915, the Beaulieu Airfield was built in 1942 and operations continued here until 1950. A history of the airfield can be seen here.

The above coordinates take you to the first stage. Just down from this spot is the bridge over the railway main Poole to Waterloo line. With lovely views along the railway. The woods around here are a deer research area. Cars are not allowed but there are cycle ways through. You will find a 35mm film canister with the co-ordinates of the second stage.

This second stage is placed near a WW11 aircraft bay. A round concrete dispersal apron the planes were kept on. The old aerodrome has mostly been removed now but certain bits of the taxiing area are left. The area is popular with model aircraft fliers so you might get to see some planes. Again you are looking for a 35mm cannister with the co-ordinates for the final cache.

The cache is placed in some woodland. Don't worry if you loose signal as the actual cache is by some open ground so a lock should be possible. several places to park but it will involve a half mile or so walk. The cache is a 2 litre tupperware type container.

Stages one and two are almost cache and dash they are so close to the parking available but the final cache will involve a walk through the woods along a track which will be muddy and not really wheelchair or buggy accessible.

Beaulieu Heath Airfield
The route is fairly flat so quite possible to cycle the whole thing. The start is very close to Roundhill camp site. Half way between stage 1 and 2 is Hatchet pond. This is a good place for rest and in good weather nearly always has an ice cream van, if not a small detour from this point towards Beaulieu will take you to a farm shop with suitable refreshments.
